Monochromatic Style
If you are someone who wants to be stylish, yet simple, and not put in much effort, then monochromatic looks will become your new favorite way to wear color. Monochromatic outfits continue to be my failsafe for adding color into a wardrobe. Adding color to your look can be hard to master, but by using monochromatic color theory, the seemingly impossible feat becomes painless.
To keep things simple, a monochromatic look derives from one color. While the term is more commonly associated with photography or film (think black and white picture), in fashion, it is used to describe an outfit with items varying in different shades (adding black) or tints (adding white) of a single color.
Both men and women have adopted this powerful style move for decades. For women - think Coco Chanel’s little black dress, Michelle Obama’s purple ensemble at the 2021 Inauguration, and all of Kim Kardashian’s chocolate brown outfits. For men - picture People’s Sexiest Man Alive winners Idris Elba and Ryan Reynolds.
Wondering how to execute a monochromatic look?
You don’t need to be super matchy-matchy. Pick both light and dark items of a single color. For example, in today’s look of the week, the pants are a lighter shade of blue with a darker navy blue jacket.
Keep it simple. Choose plain basics and don’t go overboard with print.
Add texture with accessories. Break up the single color with different materials and accessories. In today’s look, the bracelet is rope, pants are a twill, and shoes are suede — mixing these three materials keep the look more interesting.
Sometimes the most muted outfit combinations can make the loudest statement.
